Detection

Relevant Statutes:

Offshore Installations (Prevention of Fire and Explosion, and Emergency Response) Regulations 1995 [PFEER]

The Duty Holder shall take appropriate measures - with a view to detecting fire and other events which may require emergency response, including the provision of means for:

·      detecting and recording the accumulation of flammable or toxic gases

·      identifying leakages of flammable liquids

With a view to enabling information to be conveyed forthwith to place from which action can be instigated.

Detection arrangements could include:

·      automatic detection systems for fire, heat, smoke, flammable and toxic gas

·      ballast control room inclinometers, mooring tension gauges, position monitoring systems

·      use of radar to detect an approaching vessel

as well as situations where automatic detection systems are not available such as using responsible staff to monitor:

·      incoming helicopter flights

·      diving operations

·      supply vessel operations or

·      work over the side
