Lifesaving Appliances

Relevant Statutes:

  • Offshore Installations (Prevention of Fire and Explosion, and Emergency Response) Regulations 1995, Reg 20 [PFEER]

The Duty Holder shall ensure that survival craft, life-rafts, life-buoys, life-jackets and plant for like purposes:

  • are of such colour as will make them conspicuous when in use
  • are (where applicable) suitably equipped and
  • are kept available for immediate use in sufficient numbers

Suitably equipped

Equipment could include:

  • communications equipment
  • medical equipment
  • devices enabling them to be tracked once they are in the sea Provision should be made in life-rafts and survival craft for those who might have been injured.

Life-saving appliances may have to be taken out of service for routine preventive maintenance, inspection etc. This is allowed provided that it does not compromise the arrangements made for evacuation and escape in reasonably foreseeable emergencies.
