Safety Management System (SMS)

Relevant Statutes:

  • Management and Administration Regulations 1992 [MAR]
  • Offshore Installations (Prevention of Fire and Explosion, and Emergency Response) Regulations 1995 [PFEER]
  • Safety Case Regulations 1992 [SCR]

All duty holders/employers are required to have arrangements in place to cover health and safety.

The arrangements should be integrated with all other management systems and should include:

Planning - A systematic approach which identifies objectives and priorities.

Organisation - The structure that ensures progressive improvement in health and safety performance

Control - Ensuring decisions are implemented as planned

Monitoring and Review - Progressive improvement in health and safety can only be achieved through the constant development of policies, approaches to implementation and techniques of risk control.

Arrangements for health and safety have to be recorded including persons appointed to give health and safety assistance (see Health and Safety Assistance)
